Thunder Bay - 256 new residential units started construction last year, and if you ask the city's Housing Accelerator Fund project manager, Summer Stevenson, that is good news. "We have had great success," Stevenson said. "We have exceeded our target (housing starts) by 100%." Stevenson said the city started 256 new homes last year, well above the provincial target of 187 new housing starts. She expects the provincial target this year to be around 200, but she said the city's internal target is much higher. Stevenson hopes to have 35 by 2025.

Recently, according to government data from spring 2024, compliance issues among international students in Canada have drawn widespread attention. The data shows that nearly 50,000 international students failed to show up for classes at their colleges and universities, sparking heated debate about the effectiveness of Canada's international student compliance system. According to statistics from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), this absence rate accounts for 6.9% of all international students. Canada has had an international student compliance system in place since 2014, requiring designated learning institutions to report twice a year on whether international students are enrolled and attending classes as required. The system is designed to prevent non-compliant students from abusing study permits and to promptly identify any suspicious activity.

Thunder Bay Mayor John Collins says the city's proposed 2025 municipal tax increase is currently the lowest among Ontario cities with a population over 100,000. Collins acknowledged that some cities are still working on their municipal budgets and have not yet released final figures. But he said that so far, only two cities have tax increases below 4%. Collins said: "Ottawa's spending is 3.9%, and ours is 3.7%. We don't know about Ottawa's situation... we don't know how much of their reserves they used to achieve that. Whether that includes all the costs of their agencies, boards, and commissions, we don't have that level of detail." Co

Thunder Bay — The deepest, longest cold snap of the season is about to hit northwestern Ontario. Environment Canada believes this could lead to an extreme cold warning for the Thunder Bay area. By Monday and Tuesday, daytime highs will only reach -23 C, 14 degrees below normal. But the wind will indeed make things very uncomfortable, and for exposed skin,

This formation allows plows to clear multiple lanes efficiently, but drivers often try to weave between the plows, putting themselves and the plow drivers at significant risk. The OPP says that poor driving habits, rather than bad driving conditions, are the main cause of winter collisions on Ontario highways. One driver was most
