OPP reminds drivers to be careful when driving near snowplows

Drivers in northwestern Ontario are being asked to use caution when driving near snow plows on highways in the region.

According to a release from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) on Wednesday, snow plow operators have reported an increase in dangerous driving behaviours, including vehicles following too closely or passing dangerously, especially when plows are travelling in a staggered formation.

This formation allows plows to clear multiple lanes efficiently, but drivers often try to weave between the plows, putting themselves and the plow operators at significant risk.

The OPP says poor driving habits, not poor driving conditions, are the main cause of collisions on Ontario highways in the winter.

A video recently captured by a driver shows a transport truck narrowly avoiding a collision with a school bus while attempting to pass a snow plow near Rainbow Falls Provincial Park on Highway 17, which could have had fatal consequences.

The OPP reminds drivers to stay alert while driving, be aware of road conditions and other vehicles, and eliminate all distractions, including cell phones and other electronic devices.

Police also ask drivers to slow down and maintain their speed, adjusting their driving to current weather conditions. They should also leave plenty of space between vehicles, as stopping distances become longer on snow-covered or icy roads.

Most importantly, be patient when snow plows arrive in the area, and never attempt to pass them when they are working in a convoy.
