What is Thunder Bay like?

A city of about 109,000 and the largest in northwestern Ontario: slow-paced, short commutes, house prices and rents clearly below the Greater Toronto Area, and the natural setting — Lake Superior, the Sleeping Giant — as its calling card. The Chinese community is small but active, and its housing, classifieds and job information is concentrated on lakebbs. The main drawbacks are the long winter (January averages about −13 °C) and the distance to Toronto.

Per Statistics Canada's 2021 census, the city has 108,843 residents and the metropolitan area 123,258, making it the largest city in northwestern Ontario.

Cold but manageable: January averages about −13.4 °C (Environment Canada climate normals), indoor heating is thorough and snow clearing is a well-run routine. With a parka, snow boots and winter tires, school and work carry on as normal.
