Bean Fiend Café to close March 24; owner discusses business struggles and transition period

After nearly 14 years in business, the beloved Bean Fiend Café will officially close its doors on March 24. The café will continue to operate on a limited basis until a new operator is found to lease the space.

Owner Brian Hamilton has built strong connections with an excellent team and loyal customer base since transforming the space into a café (formerly Red Earth Imports). But Hamilton, who also serves as the city councillor for the McKellar ward, says juggling municipal duties with running the café has become too much.

"This was a difficult decision, and I have never had such an amazing staff and customer base as I do now," Hamilton admitted. "We love it here and consider Bay and Algoma home. However, in the current economic climate, I think everyone is going through a transition, and this isn't just my problem."

He noted that beyond his limited personal energy, running a food service business is tougher in today's business climate. "Running a café requires a lot of time and energy, and with other commitments demanding my attention, it has become unsustainable to continue."

Hamilton urged residents to continue supporting local small businesses, emphasizing that in the post-pandemic era and amid economic uncertainty, small businesses need attention and support more than ever. "Please support the local businesses you love with your actions; they are going through a very difficult time."

Despite the uncertain future, Hamilton hopes a new operator will take over this gem of a location, bringing new energy to the community and continuing the warm atmosphere the café once created. He said: "I hope someone will take it over and take it to the next level with fresh ideas. I believe there is still huge potential waiting to be unlocked here."
