Mechanical failure forces plane to land on highway

Nipigon - Ontario Provincial Police have confirmed that late last week, a plane was forced to land on Highway 11 north of Nipigon due to mechanical issues.

In a news release issued Monday, the OPP said police are investigating the circumstances of the incident, which occurred at approximately 5 p.m. Friday, about 20 kilometres north of the Highway 11/17 junction.

The small single-engine aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing on the highway due to mechanical failure. The pilot was not injured, and the plane sustained minimal damage. When police arrived, the aircraft was stopped in the middle of the highway, with traffic halted in both directions, creating long lineups.

The Transportation Safety Board was notified of the incident. The plane was subsequently removed from the highway, and the highway was reopened to traffic shortly thereafter.
