Thunder Bay blizzard hits: multiple suspensions in schools, transportation and municipal services

[Thunder Bay, February 28, 2025] Last night, a fierce late-winter blizzard hit Thunder Bay, affecting multiple sectors across the city. School transportation, elementary and post-secondary institutions, public transit, road clearing, community services, and garbage collection all had to adjust their operations due to the severe weather.

1. Educational institutions affected

• School pickups cancelled. The blizzard led to the complete cancellation of student pickup services. Although secondary schools remained open, elementary schools were originally closed due to a parent activity day, and the poor road conditions further ensured student safety.
• Post-secondary institutions adjust class schedules. Lakehead University cancelled all in-person classes due to poor road conditions, while online courses continued as usual, and the campus remained open to students and staff. Meanwhile, Confederation College also announced the suspension of all classes that day due to the severe winter weather, although on-campus services remained open to ensure students could access support if needed.

2. Transportation and municipal services

• Transit and city transportation disrupted. Thunder Bay Transit temporarily suspended operations due to continuous snowfall and icy roads. Officials said they are closely monitoring the situation and will resume service as soon as road conditions improve.
• Road and sidewalk clearing underway. Municipal crews began deploying snowplows in the early morning to clear major roads, collector roads, and bus lanes; at the same time, major sidewalks and trails began shoveling in the early morning, with residential area clearing expected to proceed after the blizzard ends.
• Garbage collection postponed. Due to snow accumulation and icy roads, the garbage collection service originally scheduled for Friday was cancelled. Residents in affected areas are advised to leave their garbage at the curb for collection on Saturday.

3. Community service adjustments

• Food bank temporarily closed
  Due to the blizzard and the suspension of transit services, the Thunder Bay Food Bank was unable to operate normally on Friday and announced a temporary closure, reopening on Monday at 9 a.m. to continue providing support to clients in need.

As the blizzard continues, Thunder Bay is facing unprecedented winter challenges. Municipal departments and various agencies are responding urgently, reminding residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to keep monitoring official updates to ensure personal and property safety.
