Police charge 76-year-old man with stunt driving and speeding

Thunder Bay - The Thunder Bay Police Service's traffic unit laid stunt driving and speeding charges against a 76-year-old man on Saturday.

According to the police service's Facebook page, at around 5:30 p.m., an unmarked police cruiser traveling westbound on Oliver Road was passed by an SUV traveling at 90 km/h near Balmoral Street to the east.

As the vehicle continued westbound on Oliver Road, it reached 105 km/h in a community safety zone with a 50 km/h limit near Lakehead University and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Police stopped the vehicle near the centre, and the driver is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in May.

The service said it reminds residents that exceeding the speed limit by 40 km/h or more where the limit is below 80 km/h is considered stunt driving, which carries serious consequences upon conviction, including hefty fines, licence suspension, a 30-day roadside suspension, and a 14-day vehicle impoundment.

The service also said that when the speed limit exceeds 80 km/h, exceeding it by 50 km/h is also considered stunt driving.
