Assault suspect flees to Canada across frozen river, iPhone alerts police to crash

Thunder Bay - Based on clues from an iPhone, police arrested a man wanted for aggravated assault who attempted to flee to Canada in a stolen car.

The Ontario Provincial Police said that at 2:21 a.m. Sunday, Rainy River District OPP received an automatic accident notification alerting them to an abandoned vehicle on Atwood Worthington Road 1.

The vehicle was linked to a serious domestic violence case in the United States.

A male suspect broke a woman's arm and stole her vehicle. While attempting to flee, he drove across a frozen river from the U.S. into Canada, but got stuck in a snowbank.

Two officers tracked the suspect on foot and found him hiding among a herd of cattle in a farm field. The man had also fallen through the ice and was soaking wet.

The suspect was arrested and turned over to the Canada Border Services Agency, which filed documents and transferred the man to U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Koochiching County Sheriff's Office.
