Thunder Bay Red River Road streetscape renovation enters final phase, expected to be completed in 6 to 8 weeks

On April 22, 2025, the City of Thunder Bay launched the final phase of the Red River Road streetscape improvement project. The construction section is located between St. Paul Street and Court Street, and is expected to be closed for 6 to 8 weeks, depending on weather conditions.

The work includes paving the final surface, installing street furniture (such as benches, garbage bins, and bike racks), upgrading the electrical system, street lighting, and traffic signals. In addition, trees and perennial plants will be planted to enhance the street's appearance.

Although the section will be closed to vehicles during construction, pedestrians can still pass through, and nearby restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues will remain open. The city encourages residents to use nearby streets and parking lots, including the Waterfront Parkade, to reduce inconvenience.

This project is part of the city's $13 million "Reimagining the North Core Streetscape" plan, aimed at updating aging underground infrastructure and improving the downtown walking experience and event hosting capabilities. Previously, the Court Street section has been largely completed.

After the project is completed, the city plans to start construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Cumberland Street and the Marina Park Overpass to further improve traffic flow and safety.
