IRCC releases specific cases of PGWP [stacking]

In some cases, completing multiple programs can allow you to obtain a longer Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), up to three years.

[加一R] "Program stacking" is the term IRCC uses to describe a student completing multiple PGWP-eligible programs at a designated learning institution (DLI) that is eligible for PGWP.

[一R] Example 1: Completing two PGWP-eligible programs

As of November 1, 2024, if a student completes two PGWP-eligible programs consecutively within two years of completing the first program, the validity of their PGWP may be calculated based on the total duration of both programs.

[二R] Example 2: Completing a first program that is not PGWP-eligible and a second program that is PGWP-eligible

As of November 1, 2024, if a student completes two programs consecutively, where the first program is not PGWP-eligible, they will not benefit from program stacking when determining the validity of their PGWP. The duration of the PGWP will be based solely on the PGWP-eligible program.

[三R] Example 3: Completing a first program that is PGWP-eligible and a second program that is not PGWP-eligible

As of November 1, 2024, if a student completes two programs consecutively, where the first program is PGWP-eligible and the second is not, they will not benefit from program stacking when determining the validity of their PGWP. The duration of the PGWP will be based solely on the PGWP-eligible program, and the applicant must apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving confirmation of completion of the PGWP-eligible program.

In other words, graduates who do not apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving confirmation of completion of their first PGWP-eligible program will lose their eligibility for the Post-Graduation Work Permit
