Northwestern Ontario's first heat warning of the season, with Thunder Bay temperatures nearing 25 °C and wildfire risk rising in tandem

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for parts of northwestern Ontario, with daytime temperatures expected to reach 29 to 32°C from May 11 to 14, and nighttime temperatures staying between 18 and 21°C. Although Thunder Bay is not officially included in the warning area, temperatures this week will rise to 23 to 25°C, well above the May average. In addition, the UV index in the Thunder Bay area is expected to reach 7, which is 'high' level, and the public is advised to strengthen sun protection measures.

Rising electricity demand

Hot weather may lead to increased electricity demand in Thunder Bay. According to the municipal energy management plan, during summer heat, air conditioning use increases, which may put pressure on the power grid. Municipal authorities recommend residents stagger the use of high-power appliances between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to relieve grid load.

Increased forest fire risk

Dry and hot weather also raises the forest fire risk in the Thunder Bay area. According to the latest forest fire update report, the fire danger rating in the Thunder Bay and Nipigon areas is 'moderate to high'. Surrounding areas such as Red Lake, Dryden, and Kenora have higher fire danger ratings, with multiple forest fires already occurring. Residents are urged to avoid open flames outdoors and comply with local fire regulations.

Health and safety advice

In hot weather, everyone may face health risks, especially the elderly, infants, and those with chronic illnesses. Environment Canada advises the public to drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours, and stay in shaded or air-conditioned environments. If symptoms such as headache, dizziness, or nausea occur, take immediate cooling measures and seek medical help if necessary.

Future weather forecast

According to the weather forecast, during May 12 to 14, daytime temperatures in Thunder Bay will remain between 20 and 25°C, with nighttime temperatures between 4 and 8°C. A cold front is expected to move south after Wednesday, bringing cooler temperatures and possible showers.
