Thunder Bay issues special air quality statement, forest fire smoke affects residents' health

Recently, Environment Canada issued a Special Air Quality Statement for Thunder Bay in northwestern Ontario, reminding local residents to be aware of the negative impact of smoke from nearby forest fires on air quality.

According to Environment Canada, the smoke comes from multiple ongoing forest fires around Thunder Bay. The smoke has not only significantly reduced visibility in the city but also noticeably increased the concentration of particulate matter in the air, which may affect residents' health to varying degrees, especially posing a higher risk to the elderly, children, and residents with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

Authorities advise that residents affected by the smoke should minimize outdoor activities and ensure indoor air circulation and purification. Sensitive individuals with poor health conditions who experience symptoms such as coughing, sore throat, eye irritation, or difficulty breathing should seek medical attention promptly.

Additionally, the environmental department noted that air quality may change at any time with changing weather conditions. The public is advised to closely monitor the latest air quality information released by government agencies and follow relevant guidelines to take appropriate protective measures.
