Good news! Thunder Bay officially launches construction of indoor soccer field sports facility

According to the municipal official website and the "Get Involved Thunder Bay" platform, the latest information has been released about the city's upcoming multi-purpose indoor turf sports facility near the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium.

- Location: The site is near the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium and Canada Games Complex area, formerly a baseball field.

Project Timeline

City Council approval: May 26, 2025

Design completion: Spring 2025

Construction start: Summer 2025

Opening to the public: Planned for official operation in Fall 2026

Core Facility Features

1. FIFA-quality artificial turf, main field area approximately 310' × 190', with a minimum clear height of 40 feet, and flexible zoning capabilities.

2. Division options include:

- One full 11-a-side field, or two half fields,

- or four quarter fields, suitable for small-group training like 7-a-side.

3. Seating for about 500 spectators, with changing rooms, referee rooms, concession stands, and rentable community spaces.

4. Equipped with multi-purpose meeting rooms, fully accessible design, and close to bus routes for easy public access.

5. Meets LEED Silver equivalent energy efficiency standards, with potential for net-zero emission infrastructure upgrades.

User Groups and Impact

According to statistics, the long winter drives a surge in indoor sports demand in Thunder Bay. The project is expected to serve over 6,000 participants, covering sports such as soccer, rugby, ultimate frisbee, American softball, and cricket.

The project aligns with the "Safety and Well-being" pillar of the city's "Maamawe – Growing Together" strategy, aiming to enhance equitable community health opportunities and support city development.
