Province to offer rebates for home energy retrofits

Thunder Bay - The Ontario government announced a new program on Friday aimed at helping families save money.

Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Kevin Holland said the program is part of Canada's 12-year, $10.9 billion total investment in energy efficiency, the largest such investment commitment in Canadian history.

"Ontario's demand for electricity is growing rapidly, driven by population growth, increased industrial activity, and new technologies," Holland said.

He said the rapid growth and demand present both challenges and opportunities.

The Home Renovation Savings Program will launch on January 28, offering rebates of up to 30% for energy-efficient home renovations and improvements, including $600 for home energy assessments, $100 for each new window and door, and rebates of up to $8,900 for insulation.

"Whether you want to reduce your home's carbon footprint, lower your monthly energy bills, or increase the value of your home, this program can help you save more money," Holland said.

Later this year, the program will expand to include rebates for energy-efficient appliances such as refrigerators and freezers.

The government's Affordable Energy Act ensures that the Home Renovation Savings Program and other programs will be expanded to homeowners who use propane and oil heating, rather than being limited to those who use electric heating.

"This expansion means that no one will be left behind as we transition to a more energy-efficient province," Holland added.

By 2036, this expansion is expected to reduce the province's peak demand by 3,000 megawatts, equivalent to taking 3 million homes off the grid.

The province is expanding the popular Peak Perks program with a new initiative for small businesses. Businesses will receive a $75 financial incentive when they first join the program, plus an additional $20 per year for each eligible smart thermostat connected to a central air conditioning system or heat pump unit.

The province's $20.9 billion investment is expected to deliver $23.1 billion in benefits to the electricity system and save taxpayers $12.2 billion in electricity system costs.

"We are working to reduce the impact on the grid while saving you money," said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Electrification.

Lecce said to use the program, visit saveonenergy.ca, upload your receipts, and you will receive your rebate within 60 days.
