Thunder Bay sets heat record, temperatures to plunge for Victoria Day long weekend

On May 13, 2025, Thunder Bay, Ontario experienced rare hot weather, with temperatures soaring to 29°C, breaking the 67-year historical record set in 1958. Nearby Atikokan, Dryden, and Kenora also recorded 31°C, setting new records for the highest mid-May temperatures in those areas.

However, Environment Canada predicts this unusual heat will quickly reverse. With the Victoria Day long weekend approaching, temperatures in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas are expected to drop significantly, with the high on Saturday, May 17 forecast to be only 9°C to 11°C, about 8 to 9°C below the mid-May average. Meteorologist Jeff Coulson said, "Over the next few weeks, we expect temperatures in Thunder Bay and other parts of northwestern Ontario to return to seasonal or slightly below seasonal levels."

Despite this, long-term forecast models suggest that temperatures in June may be slightly above normal, providing more pleasant weather conditions for summer activities.

Victoria Day is a statutory holiday in Canada, observed on the last Monday of May each year, which falls on May 19 this year, marking the start of summer. However, the expected low temperatures and rain may affect residents' outdoor plans such as camping, barbecues, and fireworks displays. Citizens should prepare in advance for cold and wet weather to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday.
