Queen's Park - The Ontario government plans to introduce legislation that would allow areas containing critical minerals, such as the Ring of Fire, to be designated as areas of strategic importance.

The commitment was made in the throne speech at the opening of the new legislature on Tuesday.

The government says the legislation would give it the power to support the province's economic and security interests by offering "significantly streamlined permitting and approvals" to developers who meet high operational, safety, and environmental standards.

It also commits to fulfilling constitutional obligations to consult with Indigenous peoples.

The Canadian government calls the Ring of Fire Canada's front line against U.S. President Donald Trump's economic threats, and says the 5,000-square-kilometre area holds some of the world's most promising mineral development opportunities, with deposits of chromite, copper, cobalt, nickel, platinum, and other minerals.

"To effectively seize this opportunity... we need to get critical minerals out of the ground, process them, and ship them to factories," the report states. "For decades, Ontario's critical minerals have been tied up and frustrated by red tape and duplicative federal approval processes that can take up to 15 years in total."

The speech promised to ensure northern communities, including Indigenous communities, benefit from mining through equity partnerships.

In February, during the provincial election campaign, Premier Doug Ford visited Thunder Bay andrevealed his intention to designate areas of strategic importance.

In Tuesday's throne speech, the government said it would not only speed up mining approvals but also support critical mineral processing in the province.

"Minerals mined in Ontario will not be extracted and shipped overseas; they will be refined in Ontario, creating new opportunities for workers in northern hubs like Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, and Timmins."

Indigenous leaders, including the chief of the Matawa First Nations, have in the pastopposed Ford's desire to speed up development in the Ring of Fire.

So far, neither the Matawa First Nations nor Nishnawbe Aski Nation have responded to the government's commitments in the throne speech.

But NDP leader Marit Stiles said: "Unleashing our province's economic potential means working with northern communities, working with Indigenous peoples, to ensure critical mining and infrastructure projects are done right, not just done fast."
