Severe storm hits northwestern Ontario, tornado warning issued, multiple power outages and road closures

THUNDER BAY, July 27, 2025 - Today, a sudden severe storm hit several areas in northwestern Ontario. Environment Canada has issued a tornado warning, reminding residents to be cautious of the dangers that extreme weather may bring.

According to information from the meteorological department, this tornado warning covers several areas including Kakabeka Falls, Whitefish Lake, Arrow Lake, Atikokan, Shebandowan, and Quetico Park. Weather radar monitoring shows strong storm activity accompanied by visibly rotating thunderstorm clouds, with expected wind speeds up to 70 km/h, possibly accompanied by hail and brief heavy rain.

Due to the storm, approximately 1,700 residents in the Thunder Bay area are without power. The power company is actively organizing crews for repairs, but due to the severe damage caused by the storm, power has not yet been fully restored.

The storm has also caused numerous trees to fall in surrounding areas, with debris scattered on roads. Especially in the South Gillies and Pass Lake areas, some major roads are severely blocked or temporarily closed, significantly affecting local traffic. Cleanup efforts are currently underway, and officials urge residents to avoid these areas for the time being.

Environment Canada urges the public to stay vigilant, stay away from windows and vulnerable structures, and immediately seek safe indoor shelter if signs of extreme weather are observed. Additionally, drivers should avoid driving through flooded roads or areas blocked by fallen trees and debris.

As of now, there is no conclusive evidence that the storm has produced an actual tornado, but meteorologists emphasize that the storm clouds still have the conditions to form a tornado, and advise residents to continue monitoring the latest weather updates.
