Freezing rain warning issued for large parts of Northern Ontario

Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for a large area of Northern Ontario. The warning extends from Cat Lake First Nation to the Ontario-Quebec border, covering Armstrong, Nakina, and areas north of Highway 11 up to Neskantaga.

According to the meteorological department, the region is expected to see ice accumulation of 2 to 5 millimeters. Freezing rain is expected to spread this evening, possibly mixed with ice pellets and flurries, making roads, walkways, and parking lots extremely slippery. Additionally, the ice buildup could bring down tree branches and even cause power outages.

As a result, a section of Highway 599 from Savant Lake to the Pickle Lake junction has been closed today. A winter storm watch is also in effect, stretching from the Manitoba border to the Dryden area, and from the Canada-U.S. border to areas south of North Spirit Lake.

Officials are reminding the public to closely monitor the latest weather forecasts and take necessary safety precautions in response to the severe weather expected to last until Saturday evening.
