Thunder Bay Transit launches new smart card Lift Pass, currently available for free at the Transit office

Thunder Bay Transit is piloting a brand-new electronic smart card, the Lift Pass, with a soft launch at its office. Passengers can now visit the Transit office at 570 Fort William Rd and get this reloadable smart card for free until April 30; after that, each Lift Pass will cost $5.

According to Laura Daniels, Thunder Bay Transit's Customer Service Supervisor, the soft launch aims to invite the public to try out the new digital payment system. Since its introduction in January, the system offers passengers a new way to pay, with options to reload online or directly at the Transit office, supporting various fare types such as day passes, multi-ride passes for 10 rides, or monthly passes.

When using the Lift Pass, passengers simply tap the card on the display inside the bus when boarding to complete the payment process. Meanwhile, traditional cash payments, paper tickets, and monthly passes will continue to be accepted to meet the needs of different passengers.

Additionally, Daniels reminded that students and seniors must show valid ID to enjoy discounted fares. For children aged 12 and under, although they can still ride for free, they must also have a Lift Pass card.

Thunder Bay Transit will add more card purchase locations in the future, with specific locations to be announced in the coming weeks.
