City to build 5 new crosswalks

Thunder Bay - By the end of this year, pedestrians will have several new locations to safely cross multiple major city roads.

The city is currently tendering for a contractor to install four new traffic signals and a pedestrian overpass. These traffic signals can be activated with the push of a button; the overpass will be the same as those already installed around Thunder Bay.

According to Lisa Parent, project engineer for the City of Thunder Bay, new traffic signals are planned at the intersection of Arthur Street and Leland Avenue, on Red River Road between Clarkson Street and Junot Avenue, and at two locations along Golf Links Road (one north of Oliver Road, one south of Oliver Road).

Parent added that the new pedestrian overpass will be located at the intersection of Hodder Avenue and Lillian Street.

"I think the city is clearly prioritizing pedestrian crossing facilities, and we obviously want to provide these," she said. "Our traffic technology experts have highlighted these locations, which supports the active transportation plan."

Parent said input from the city's active transportation planning and urban traffic departments was used to determine the locations. The city has received a grant that will cover 70% of the costs.

The installations are expected to be completed by the end of the 2025 construction season.
