The Marina Park Overpass has been closed since July 22, 2025, and construction of a roundabout has begun at the Cumberland & Water Street intersection.

Thunder Bay – To improve traffic efficiency and safety at the intersection of Cumberland Street North and North Water Street, the Municipal Engineering Department will starting Tuesday, July 22, 2025 close the Marina Park Overpassto fully proceed with the construction of a roundabout at this intersection, expected to last until October.

Thunder Bay City Council approved the roundabout project in April 2025. In the previous design framework, the Marina Park Overpass was already planned to connect with Cumberland and Water at three points. Due to the poor condition of underground sewage pipes, the scope of the project was expanded to include water pipe replacement and road resurfacing, extending from the Marina Park Overpass all the way to Tupper Street. Engineering Department head Matthew Miedema noted that compared to the 20-year maintenance cost of a traffic signal system at about CAD 300,000, the roundabout would only require about CAD 70,000 for maintenance.

The temporary closure of the Marina Park Overpass and the construction of the roundabout reflect Thunder Bay's deeper planning in traffic management and waterfront development. Although the project temporarily causes travel adjustments, in the long run it will significantly enhance the safety and capacity of the area, improve access to the waterfront park and surrounding areas, and ultimately benefit residents and visitors.
