Blood Worm Moon coming: total lunar eclipse will turn the full moon blood red

Northern Ontario is set to experience a rare astronomical event. Brendon Roy, a member and chief vice-president of the Thunder Bay Astronomical Society, revealed that a total lunar eclipse will take place from Thursday night into the early hours of Friday, during which the full moon will display a captivating blood-red color, with the entire phenomenon lasting about 65 minutes.

During this time, as the moon gradually enters Earth's shadow, the night sky will become deeper; if the sky is clear, the twinkling stars usually hidden by moonlight can also be seen. Roy explained, "From the moon's perspective, Earth is slowly blocking the sun, and for viewers in North America, we will witness Earth's shadow quietly covering the moon's surface."

It is understood that although the full moon will rise with the sunset on Thursday evening, the real celestial show will not begin until after 1 a.m., with the best viewing time expected around 3 a.m. Roy suggested that interested residents might bring a pair of binoculars, which will help observe the eclipse process in detail, while also catching a glimpse of other bright planets in the night sky, such as Mars and Jupiter.

Additionally, he reminded observers to keep warm to avoid suffering from the cold. Roy emphasized, "Such astronomical wonders are not common, and weather and other factors often affect viewing opportunities. If we are fortunate to witness this on Friday, it is unknown when we might encounter such a spectacular sight again."
