Update: Canada Post cancels mail delivery

Thunder Bay - If you are waiting for something important in the mail, you may have to wait until later this week.

Early Tuesday afternoon, due to deteriorating weather conditions, Canada Post issued a "red alert" for the Thunder Bay area and recalled all delivery employees.

Tuesday morning, the city received heavy snow, and a "yellow alert" was initially issued. In this situation, couriers try their best to deliver, but delays may occur.

A Canada Post spokesperson said: "The safety of our employees is our top priority."

A rural mail carrier told The News Watch that the snowfall brought significant challenges.

"Our supervisor told us to proceed with caution, but before I had a chance to leave, several workers had already returned. They warned me that conditions out there were terrible and not worth the effort."

He explained that as a rural mail carrier, he uses his own vehicle to deliver mail.

"It's crazy out there. The heavy snow greatly reduces visibility," he said, adding that a colleague saw six car accidents on the road this morning.

Canada Post said it encourages customers to clear snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, and driveways to ensure safe access to front doors when mail service resumes.
