IRCC Update: Big Drop in Immigration Backlog!

IRCC updated the latest data on processing immigration applications on January 27, 2025, showing a significant reduction in the immigration backlog.

Citizenship applications: The backlog increased slightly by 3.84% to 40,600 applications, reflecting an increase in new applications.

Permanent residence applications: The backlog increased by 8.4% to 344,700 applications, indicating that despite the overall reduction, some categories still face pressure.

Temporary residence applications: Decreased significantly by 14.23%, bringing the backlog down to 557,000 people, indicating that IRCC is focused on managing high-demand categories such as study and work permits.

New update from IRCC on 2025 backlog projections

Citizenship: The backlog is expected to hover around 17%, with improvements anticipated.

Express Entry and PNP: Both categories are expected to maintain a 20% backlog to stabilize processing times.

Spousal sponsorship: Expected to maintain a stable backlog of 15%.

Temporary Resident Visas (TRV): Despite the current backlog of 75%, it is expected to drop significantly to 50% by February 2025, indicating a strong intention to manage this category.

Study and work permits: Both will see backlog reductions, with targets of 24% and 32% respectively, aligning with efforts to strengthen Canada's education and labor sectors.
