Latest Greenland poll: 85% of residents do not want to become Americans

After U.S. President-elect Donald Trump threatened to buy Greenland, two Danish media outlets, in cooperation with polling agencies, conducted a survey to find out whether Greenland's residents would be willing to have the island incorporated into the United States. The results, released on the 29th, showed that 85% of residents do not want to leave the Kingdom of Denmark, of which they are currently a part, to join the United States.

This is the first opinion poll on whether Greenland's residents would be willing to be incorporated into the United States.

Since being sworn in on the 20th of this month, Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to annex Greenland, which currently enjoys autonomy within the Kingdom of Denmark, and has even said he does not rule out the possibility of using tariffs to force the Danish government to comply. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen recently had a phone conversation with Trump, who had not yet taken office, emphasizing that Greenland's future should be decided by Greenlanders themselves. According to reports, the British Financial Times learned from multiple sources that the atmosphere of that phone call was "very bad."

The Danish Prime Minister has also recently visited several European countries to seek support. She recently met with French President Emmanuel Macron. After the meeting, she told the media that the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all countries must be respected. This is an important element of the international community.

The survey released on the 29th showed that nearly 85% of respondents answered negatively to the question of whether they would leave the Kingdom of Denmark to join the United States. Only 6% of respondents expressed approval, while 9% had no clear stance. Kasper Moller Hansen, a political science professor at the University of Copenhagen, told AFP that the survey clearly shows that Greenlanders do not want to become Americans.

Greenland has long had debates about whether to seek independence, but the island's economic development is highly dependent on financial support from the Danish government. The independence issue is expected to be a major topic in the local elections in April this year. A Greenlandic member of the Danish parliament told AFP that they do not want to be Danes, hope to maintain good relations with Denmark, but also want to find a different path to becoming Greenlanders.

The survey released on the 29th was initiated by Denmark's oldest daily newspaper, Berlingske, and a Greenlandic newspaper, in cooperation with polling agency Verian. Between January 22 and 26, a representative sample of 497 adult Greenlandic residents answered the questions. The survey results have a margin of error between 1.9% and 4.4%.

Greenland's total population is 57,000.
